Inspiring Ignatian Quote #25
I knew this quote was in my file, but could not find it yesterday . . . guess what was the first one I found today?!?!? So, this is what you get! I’ll even make this short since yesterday’s was quite lengthy! :)
This was Ignatius’ life for about the first 30 years. One of his associates, (Polanco) gave further details: “Although very much attached to the faith, he did not live in keeping with his belief or guard himself from sins; he was particularly careless about gambling, affairs with women, and the use of arms.” This reminds me of St. Augustine of Hippo, who actually dabbled in other wisdom traditions of the time, and practiced immorality regularly, as his mother steadfastly prayed for his conversion back to God and the Church. I think both lives can be summed up by Augustine’s famous quote from his “Confessions”: “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”
Both men, came to conversion late in life, but both made an indelible mark on followers through their radical makeovers from worldly and bodily pursuits to heavenly ones. There is hope for each of us! It is never to late.
